Susan Laurance is an Associate Professor and Tropical Leader at James Cook University in Cairns, Australia. She also holds a prestigious Australian Research Council 'Future Fellowship' and is Past President of the Association for Tropical Biology and Conservation. Her PhD research focused on the impacts of roads on Amazon forest birds, and she presently studies the effects of droughts and forest fragmentation on tropical forests in Australia and the Amazon. She also has interests in forest regeneration and landscape epidemiology in tropical environments, and in the management of protected areas and human-dominated landscapes. She is the author of over 100 scientific publications to date.
